When Life gives you lemons...
Circumstances in life throw you curves all the time. Flip the script! Turn a challenge or inconvenience into something that benefits you. Find the positive. Use those lemons to make lemonade.

The First Black Republic
On July 7th 2021 Haiti was headline news again when it's president was assassinated in his own home.
Shock! Concern! One more crisis in my birth country that’s already teetering on the brink of collapse from ongoing political, economic and social chaos since Duvalier left in 1986. Yes, the country is in a mess.
As I read a Washington Post article on the situation, I cringed when I came across that common phrase too frequently used in reporting about Haiti, "the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere," repeated several times. Then later a reporter on French television used the same "le pay le plus pauvre..." (the poorest country).
Enough! Tell the people something they may not know about Haiti. Do they also know that Haiti was the first black republic in modern history? An independent country established by former slaves, a phenomenal feat for a time when slavery dominated the western hemisphere. Why isn’t that ever mentioned?
How the first black republic got to be renamed the poorest country would require a discussion that includes the reparations the former slaves had to pay to the colonizers they kicked out of the country and the decades’ worth of covert foreign control and manipulation, all of which is not my point here.
I ask for your support in requiring news media to use the moniker of “Haiti, the first black republic” when reporting about the country. Use your own words or copy and paste the blurb below and send it to the news organizations below and others you know. Thank you.
Danielle Coulanges – a Haitian American
Attention News Editor,
For too long the news media has tramped over the dignity of the Haitian people by continually referring to the country as “the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere” even when that has no relevance to the story. While we recognize that the country has and continues to suffer its share of economic and political upheaval, Haiti was also the first black republic in modern history (in this hemisphere). An independent country established by former slaves was a phenomenal feat for a time when slavery dominated the western hemisphere. Why isn’t that ever mentioned?
How about changing the narrative? How about a new positive moniker: "Haiti, the first black republic in the western hemisphere"? If you're going to inform the public, give them something that elevates the history of the Haitian people instead of continually treading upon their misery.
